Frequently
Asked Questions
This sampling of FAQ's should
help with some basic chemistry information and troubleshooting
issues. Of course you are always welcome to contact us; we will
be happy to address any of your concerns.
Section 1: Basics
of balancing and testing pool water.
What
is pH?
It is a way to measure the acidity
or alkalinity of water. This is the most important part of chemical
balance because it protects the equipment, helps the sanitizers
do their job, and increases swimmer enjoyment.
Full range of measure 0 to 14
Ideal range
7.4 to 7.6
If it is too low
Use BioGuard® Balance Pak 200
If it is too high
Use BioGuard® Lo 'N Slo
What is total alkalinity (TA)?
It is the amount of the alkaline
components in the water. TA acts as a buffer against rapid pH
fluctuation. pH can be affected by environmental factors such
as acid rain, pollution, run-off from the surrounding land,
and fertilizers.
Keeping the TA at the proper range will help prevent pH bounce
if it is too low and help prevent scale from forming if it is
too high.
Full
range of measure 0 to 500 ppm
Ideal range
125 to 150
If it is too low
Use BioGuard® Balance Pak 100
If it is too high
Use BioGuard® Lo 'N Slo
What is calcium hardness (CH)?
It is the amount of dissolved calcium in the
water. Keeping CH at the proper range will help protect equipment
and keep water sparkling. It also helps prevent cloudy water.
Full
range of measure 0 to 2,000 PPM
Ideal range
175 to 225
If it is too low
Use BioGuard® Balance Pak 300
If it is too high
Use Scale Inhibitor. If over 400 PPM it may be necessary to
partially drain the pool and add source water with lower CH.
Section
2: Common problems
that occur in chlorinated or brominated pools.
What
can I do if algae shows up in my pool?
BioGuard® offers many solutions based on your individual
needs. Our staff at Pools Plus will make an educated recommendation
after performing a water sample test. BioGuard® has products
such as:
Banish® to kill and
control all types of swimming pool algae.
Erase®
aids in the removal of stains from green, black and mustard
algae.
Spot
Kill® is formulated especially for green or black algae
on bleached surfaces.
Spot
Kill® WP should only be used on white plaster pools, especially
for green and black algae.
What products can help me
with stains caused by metal in the water?
Pool Magnet Plus® ties up copper and iron to prevent stains.
Sparkle
Up® aids in removal of copper and iron from the water.
Stain
Remover® removes most stains caused by metals.
How
can I prevent scale from forming?
Use BioGuard
Scale Inhibitor to help prevent scale formation that can
cause serious damage to pool surface and equipment.
What
can I do if my chlorine residual continues to be low even after
shocking?
You may have an overload of contaminants causing this problem.
Use Burn Out® WP (for white plaster pools only) or Burn
Out 35 to remedy this situation. Visit us at one of our three
locations with your water sample for more personalized instructions.
How
can I get rid of slime in my pool?
Use Super Soluble to treat pink slime and water mold in
chlorinated or brominated pools. (NOTE: For SoftSwim® pools,
use new SoftSwim Assist®. It kills and controls slime and
mold in all biguanide pools.)
What
is the cure for foaming in my pool water?
BioGuard Anti Foam will eliminate foam quickly and easily in
all pools. If you have jetted returns or an attached spa or
water feature, use Algae All 60 for algae prevention in
place of Back-Up®. We do not recommend using SoftSwim in
pools with these features.
My
water looks cloudy. How can I fix that?
It depends on what is causing the cloudy water.
Lo 'N Slo® when pH is high.
Strip
Kwik® or Kleen It® when filter is dirty
Burn
Out® WP or Burn Out 35 for shocking when sanitizer level
is low.
Polysheen® Blue is also an excellent water clarifier.
Your best course of action is to bring a water sample to us.
We can test your water and provide personalized instructions
on the best corrective measures.
